Summary

The Senior Genetic Counselors maintains a clinical practice while promoting the growth of the genetic services at Sanford either directly or through referrals. They have advanced skills in counseling and skills that have proven them to be an expert in their specialty.

Job Description

Board certification and licensure in the states of their primary locations are preferred. Develops and maintains a clinical practice alongside the physicians and providers in their imbedded practice. Gathers patient information such as historical records and family health conditions for medical assessment. Assesses recurrence risks and recommends medical or genetic testing based on analysis of the risk, benefit, and cost. Conducts case research of appropriate medical genetics literature. Educates patients and health professionals about genetic disorders; ensures appropriate patient referral and care. Reviews implications with the patient and provides crisis intervention regarding unexpected genetic conditions. Communicates genetic test results to the patient, refers physician, and determines the need for appropriate follow-up. Senior Genetic Counselors will take on additional responsibilities, which include participating in program development, coordination, and administration of genetic counselor activities. Promotes program services, monitoring referral sources, inquiries regarding program and patient volume in order to enhance service utilization. Engages in active mentoring, professional development, and provides expert assistance to other genetic counselors in their region on department. Answer media requests via Sanford marketing for interviews on genetic topics. Assists Sanford marketing with development of written materials which have a genetic component. Abides by respective healthcare agency's policies. Maintains a direct role in the university genetic counseling program and helps instruct classes, supervise projects, or clinical rotations.

Qualifications

Master’s degree in Medical Genetics from program accredited by the American Board of Genetic Counseling (ABGC) is required. Possesses ABGC Board certification with a minimum of four years of experience. Minimum of four years’ experience in taking on tumor board or committee, national committee, lab reports and projects. In charge of “specialty” pharmacognetics. Currently licensed or has a temporary license with the applicable State Board of Medicine and/or possess multistate licensure privileges. Board certification or board eligible through the American Board of Genetic Counselors (ABGC) or the American Board of Medical Genetics (ABMG) is required upon hire.
